PMD (Pale Morning Dun) Bead Head Comparadun
tied by  Jim Johnson
The materials for this fly can be selected as you desire to imitate various mayflies. It seems that I usually tie the fly for myown use to imitate the PMD fly that is so common on our local streams and lakes. Ephemerella inermis is a light colored fly, often called a Sulphur on eastern waters, which is a different species of the fly. The glass bead adds very little weight to the fly and should not hinder the floating capability. The glass bead serves two purposes: most mayflies have a dark head: many tiers have difficulty in getting the winging hair to stand straight up on this fly, the bead will provide a dam to tie the hair into, force the hair to stand upright with wraps of thread against the bead, trapping the hair between.
Hook:
A light wire dry fly hook, Tiemco 100, Mustad 94840, DaiRiki 305

Thread:
6/0 or 8/0, color to compliment the body material
Tails:
Elk body hair, microfibbets, spade hackle, your choice. The PMD has usually lighter colored tails. So if you use Elk body hair, you might find bleached or natually lighter hair to be preferable.
Body:
I prefer synthetic poly material for the body. If you use fur, use a dubbing twister and twist the fur into a tight yarn that will be more water repellant.
Head:
A dark colored glass bead, diameter to suit the size of hook you are using.
Wing:
Deer hair tied in right behind the glass bead head, and up tight against it. Use the bead to force the hair to stand upright. Choose a light dun or gray colored hair.
